Saturday, May 27, Recognizing Inequalities from Graphs – Speed Dating Activity As I’m working my way through my folder of blog drafts, I’m realizing that most of the ideas have found their way into other posts. This post contains an idea that was mentioned in another post, but I never got around to sharing pictures of what the activity actually looked like. I wanted my Algebra 1 students to be able to quickly glance at a graph on a number line and determine the algebraic inequality that would produce that graph. I created a set of speed dating cards using sharpie, pencil, and colored index cards. The index cards don’t have to be colored, but I find that my kids have much more trouble seeing through the colored cards than the plain white ones. Please tell me I’m not the teacher who has the few students who waste more time trying to read the answer on the other side instead of just answering the question.
Updated 8 January c Introduction In a related article on geologic ages Ages , we presented a chart with the various geologic eras and their ages. In a separate article Radiometric dating , we sketched in some technical detail how these dates are calculated using radiometric dating techniques. As we pointed out in these two articles, radiometric dates are based on known rates of radioactivity, a phenomenon that is rooted in fundamental laws of physics and follows simple mathematical formulas.
Dating schemes based on rates of radioactivity have been refined and scrutinized for several decades.

By Aaron Smith and Maeve Duggan One in ten Americans have used an online dating site or mobile dating app themselves, and many people now know someone else who uses online dating or who has found a spouse or long-term partner via online dating. General public attitudes towards online dating have become much more positive in recent years, and social networking sites are now playing a prominent role when it comes to navigating and documenting romantic relationships.
Online dating is also relatively popular among the college-educated, as well as among urban and suburban residents. Attitudes towards online dating are becoming more positive over time Even today, online dating is not universally seen as a positive activity—a significant minority of the public views online dating skeptically.
At the same time, public attitudes towards online dating have grown more positive in the last eight years: In general, online daters themselves give the experience high marks. Yet even some online daters view the process itself and the individuals they encounter on these sites somewhat negatively. People in nearly every major demographic group—old and young, men and women, urbanites and rural dwellers—are more likely to know someone who uses online dating or met a long term partner through online dating than was the case eight years ago.
And this is especially true for those at the upper end of the socio-economic spectrum: Negative experiences on online dating sites are relatively common Even as online daters have largely positive opinions of the process, many have had negative experiences using online dating. Women are much more likely than men to have experienced uncomfortable contact via online dating sites or apps: One in five online daters have asked someone to help them review their profile.
Paid dating sites, and sites for people who are seeking partners with specific characteristics are popular with relatively large numbers of online daters: Even today, the vast majority of Americans who are in a marriage, partnership, or other serious relationship say that they met their partner through offline—rather than online—means.
References Generic Radiometric Dating The simplest form of isotopic age computation involves substituting three measurements into an equation of four variables, and solving for the fourth. The equation is the one which describes radioactive decay: The variables in the equation are: Pnow – The quantity of the parent isotope that remains now. This is measured directly. Porig – The quantity of the parent isotope that was originally present.
Thomography Thanks to thermoluminescence, it is possible to differentiate authentic excavated items from recently manufactured fakes with reasonable accuracy. How do you know when a work of art was painted? Unfortunately there are no affordable direct methods for dating pigments, except in some cases as we will see later.
For instance, it is possible to date the wood support of a panel as well as canvas. The three most important dating techniques which are useful for the analysis of works of art are: TL-Thermoluminescence Thermoluminescence dating is used for pottery. It dates items between the years , BP before present. Thermoluminescence dating is generally not very accurate. Create fake pottery that will pass the thermoluminescence test One way to pass a fake through a TL test is to expose the newly-made pottery to a high dose of artificial radiation sources, thus fooling the measurement instruments.
However, producing fakes with this method calls for expertise on the subject, as well as expensive instruments. Instead, a less sophisticated method that would deceive TL testing is to reuse original broken and unmarketable pieces.
Am I Selling Out For Not Dating Within My Race?
Admin Serious Dating This figure is directly based on the proportion of radiocarbon found in the sample. It is calculated on the assumption that the atmospheric radiocarbon concentration has always been the same as it was in and that the half-life of radiocarbon is years. To give an example if a sample is found to have a radiocarbon concentration exactly half of that for material which was modern in the radiocarbon measurement would be reported as BP.
In order to see what a radiocarbon determination means in terms of a true age we need to know how the atmospheric concentration has changed with time. Many types of tree reliably lay down one tree ring every year. British Broadcasting Corporation Home.
The online dating industry puts people’s interactions and connections at the very heart of its business. And these two concepts are closely linked. For example, if people have a connection.
It is no wonder that the biggest online dating websites are using it. We are going to see through a concrete example how to use graphs to find love with the Neo4j graph database. Online dating and graphs: In the last months a few of the major dating sites have switched to Neo4j? Why are they interested in graphs? This is a typical recommendation problem.

March 9, Taboo or not, the practice certainly isn’t new. Personal ads have a history going back at least years, according to a new book on the subject entitled “Classified: Internet dating is just the modern version of the first “matrimonial” agencies of the s, which helped lonely bachelors search for wives through printed ads, said author H. Cocks, a history lecturer at the University of Nottingham, UK.
In between, the social acceptance of personals has waxed and waned with the times.

Isochron Dating as a Current Scientific Clock By Calvin Krogman Radioactive decay has become one of the most useful methods for determining the age of formation of rocks. However, in the very principal of radiometric dating there are several vital assumptions that have to be made in order for the age to be considered valid. But what if one or some combination of these assumptions is incorrect?
Then the computed age based on the accumulation of daughter products will be incorrect Stasson In order to use the valuable information provided by radiometric dating, a new method had to be created that would determine an accurate date and validate the assumptions of radiometric dating. For this purpose, isochron dating was developed, a process “that solves both of these problems accurate date, assumptions at once” Stasson A natural clock must meet four requirements.
Isotope dating satisfies this requirement, as daughter products do not decay back to the original parent element.

New information needed to be introduced with parent and daughter isotopes. Once students are in their groups, with supplies, and general directions are given, they are on their own for doing their runs. They will do this 8 times.

Purpose To develop the idea that carbon dating is based on gathering evidence in the present and extrapolating it to the past. Students will use a simple graph to extrapolate data to its starting point. Context This lesson is the third in a three-part series about the nucleus, isotopes, and radioactive decay. The first lesson, Isotopes of Pennies , deals with isotopes and atomic mass. The second lesson, Radioactive Decay: A Sweet Simulation of Half-life , introduces the idea of half-life.
By the end of the 8th grade, students should know that all matter is made up of atoms, which are far too small to see directly through a microscope. They should also understand that the atoms of any element are alike but are different from atoms of other elements. Atoms may stick together in well-defined molecules or they could be packed together in large arrays. For students, understanding the general architecture of the atom and the roles played by the main constituents of the atom in determining the properties of materials now becomes relevant.
Having learned earlier that all the atoms of an element are identical and are different from those of all other elements, students now come up against the idea that, on the contrary, atoms of the same element can differ in important ways.
